 Past Events & FYI

Tenant Appreciation Day 2007 -- The serving counter was transformed into a covered wagon and cowboy hats adorned the heads of many as the Activity Center was decorated for this year's Wild West theme.  NBHA staff served the BBQ brisket and fixin's and live entertainment was on hand by the River Bottom Busters featuring Dayton Davis, NBHA's Maintenance Director, Police Chief Kerry Pinkham and his wife, Connie, and Thermon Burnett.  Of course, the traditional bingo game was always a hoot.  Our special guests were Honorable Mayor Johnny Branson, Councilman Joe Dike, Councilman Jackie Laney, City Secretary Carol Ensey, Police Chief Kerry Pinkham and Lt. Paul Porter, Animal Control Officer Ruth Wendell and NBHA Commissioners Jeanita McIntyre and Isabel Barfield.  Management and staff extends its appreciation to our residents and what they do for our community.

Thanksgiving Baskets 2007 -- Just before Thanksgiving, NBHA's Resident Advisory Board received non-perishable food items from the residents in order to give them to NBHA residents.  On November 19, approximately 350 food items were distributed to 12 families (23 individuals).  Many of these recipients were elderly or single moms with small children.  Four NBHA residents volunteered to sort, make baskets, fill those baskets and distribute the goods.  Great thanks goes to our residents who give so much of themselves to make their neighborhoods such a great place to live.

Education

Economic Self-Sufficiency (ESS) Class -- Monthly classes are held at the Activity Room of the main office of the Housing Authority at 303 Rice Street, New Boston  for both residents and local citizens.  The classes are free and open to the public.

GED classes -- One-on-one GED preparation classes are offered at no cost on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:30 at the Corley Homes Community Center on Ardell Hubbard Drive by Janie Crew, certified instructor.  GED testing will be paid for NBHA residents completing this tutorship.

Reading Literacy -- Private tutoring given by Laverne Stubbs throughout the week to individuals who need help to improve their reading skills.  Contact the main office for more information.

Community Events

New Boston Market -- On the first Saturday of each month from 9:00AM until 4:00PM, the New Boston Market is opened downtown at the T&P Trailhead Park.   Almost two hundred booths are set up with a wide variety of items for sell.  For more information, contact the New Boston Chamber of Commerce, at 903-628-2581.  Next Market is scheduled for May 10-11.   New Boston Market

Pioneer Days -- New Boston's 36th Annual Pioneer Days was on August 15-18, 2007.  This event annually brings thousands of people to the downtown festivities to enjoy events such as a turkey shoot, 42 tournament, a live fiddler's contest, car show and mud races as well as the carnival and lots of vendors.  There are so many activities for everyone.

Holiday Inn Express -- This new 61-room hotel is right on Interstate 30 and is a welcome addition to New Boston's tourism.

O'Reilly's Auto Parts has built their new building on the corner of Hoskins and McCoy Blvd.  Another welcome to the Heart of Bowie County.
